The festival Musica Electronica Nova (MEN) in an unusual edition entitled Growing inscribes itself into the motto of Wrocław European Capital of Culture 2016 –Spaces for Beauty. For the first time, the MEN festival will sound and grow in the new halls of the National Forum of MEN 2016 will also offer a series of events of Sound Cinema, the project accompanying the festival for several editions now. As part of ECC Wrocław 2016, composers from many parts of Europe have been invited to create city soundscapes. Ta Basque music association Musikagileak will take part in the event with the project Basque Cities Sound Portrait, to be presented on May 19.
The five works on this project, each around a Basque town, try to reflect the diversity of the geographic, social and cultural landscape. They have been created by some of the most relevant Basque composers working in the area of electroacoustic music, and touch divergent and complementary aspects: the relationship of the city with the sea, in the work of Mikel Chamizo (San Sebastián); the specificity of language and speech, that of Zuriñe F. Gerenabarrena (Bayonne); transforming the sound of the city parallel to the life of its inhabitants, created by Alfonso García de la Torre (Pamplona); a social and philosophical vision of the urban soundscape proposed Guillermo Lauzurika (Vitoria); and the international dimension of the work of María Eugenia Luc, in which she twins Bilbao with cities as far away as Melbourne.
The Basque-Navarre Association of Composers, which spreads under the acronym Musikagileak, is a non-profit organization that has as its general purpose the promotion and enhancement of Basque music of all times, paying particular attention to the dissemination of the works of current creators.
