Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle in Paris will host a roundtable discussion titled ’Ideologías lingüísticas y lengua vasca: desde la modernidad hasta nuestros días’ (Linguistic ideologies and the Basque language: from modern times to the present day) on 3 February.

The participants will address the social history of the Basque language and the challenges of its standardisation through the lenses of philosophy and sociolinguistics.

Firstly, Haritz Azurmendi, doctor in social sciences from the University of the Basque Country and director of the magazine Jakin, will analyse the discourses surrounding Basque culture that have emerged in the Basque Country throughout the modern era.

Miren Artetxe, professor at the University of the Basque Country and member of the NOR research group, will talk about the influence that linguistic ideologies can have on the revitalisation of Euskara. She will focus on how linguistic ideologies influence practices and how these practices, in turn, affect ideologies. Additionally, she will discuss the importance of considering both when addressing the processes of linguistic revitalisation. Teresa Larruzea, lecturer in Basque language and culture at Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle, will serve as the facilitator.

The event will take place at at 5:00 pm in room A608 on the Nation campus. The roundtable discussion will take place in Spanish.
