Interview with Izaro: “Euskara is one of my most important means of communication."

2024/06/10

Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.

In her latest album, ‘cerodenero’ (2023) she narrates an inner journey full of pop, folk, electronic and roots music contrasts. The 12 songs that make up the album show an emotional journey divided into four stages. A sonorous and conceptual journey that she expresses with poetry, metaphors and melodies, with ups, downs and bursts of rage and electronic music.

The show’s success among the public and critics, both locally and internationally, is noteworthy. In addition to her tour, she held a showcase in May at the BIME Pro Bogotá international music industry conference, with support from Basque. Music, She also won the Etxepare Basque Institute Award for Best Album in Basque at the MIN Awards and was an award-winner at the Bulegoa Musika Awards 2024.

What are your thoughts on the reception that ´cerodenero´ is receiving?

I´m delighted. I feel immensely grateful and fulfilled. This project has been significant for me, both artistically and personally. It has been a challenging, essential, and beautiful journey of recovery and healing. Witnessing the warm reception of something I hold dear is incredibly exhilarating.

The album is in two languages. What role does Euskara play?

Basque is one of my most important means of communication. It shapes my identity, my thought processes, and my worldview. Without Basque, I feel incomplete; it is inseparable from my very existence and plays a fundamental role in defining who I am.

You took ‘cerodenero’ to Colombia in May to BIME Pro. What was it like for you to take your latest work there?

It was very exciting. To feel that you have a place so far from home is incredible. And to have been able to share it with my work team is a lifetime gift.

Where else would you like to take your latest project?

I am willing to go wherever my music takes me. I would be especially thrilled to bring ´cerodenero´ to a Nordic country. The landscapes there inspired this album, and it feels like its true home. It would be magical to see it there.
