Chile’s longest-running international film festival, Viña del Mar, is once again featuring Basque cinema in its programme. This initiative is supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Basque Country Delegation in Chile, Peru and Colombia.

‘Las buenas compañías’ (In the Company of Women; Silvia Munt, 2023) will screen on 27 November at 7:30pm at Teatro Municipal in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Directed by Sílvia Munt and starring Alicia Falcó, Itziar Ituño and Elena Tarrats, ‘Las buenas compañías’ is based on women’s struggle for abortion rights in Spain and the case known as ‘las 11 de Basauri’, a group of eleven women who faced criminal charges for having an abortion.

Summer 1977. Bea is 16 and joins the winds of change sweeping the country; she collaborates with a group of women to raise awareness of the feminist cause, and to help them to have an abortion in safe and dignified conditions. The rebelliousness boiling in her blood will mingle with an unexpected feeling and turn her life upside down: she falls in love with a girl a little older than herself and from a good family. What she doesn´t realise is that this mysterious girl, Miren, has a secret that will catapult Bea directly into the painful world of adults.
