Etxepare works with Euskal Etxea Basque centres and universities in 21 cities around the world to launch ‘Korrika’ fun runs in support of the Basque language
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
Under the motto ‘Hitzekin’, a combination of hitz (words) and ekimen (actions), the Korrika fun run to promote the Basque language will pass through streets around the world. Once again, the Etxepare Basque Institute joins in on the race organised by AEK to take the activity beyond the limits of the Basque Country. Members of Euskal Etxeak (Basque centres) and students and teachers from the Etxepare network of university language assistants have organised various activities. In total, there will be 21 Korrika initiatives worldwide.
The 22nd Korrika will take place from 31 March to 10 April. Over the course of 11 days the fun run will cover around 2,500 kilometres through the Basque Country, starting in Amurrio and finishing in San Sebastian.
The race-related initiatives supported by Etxepare will take place in 21 cities around the world, twelve in European cities (Germany, United Kingdom, Poland...), and seven in South and North America, mainly in United States and Mexico. In Asia and Oceania, the Euskal Etxeas and universities have organised events in Tokyo and Sydney.
Basque centres around the world have put together a total of 14 activities related to the Korrika. The Etxepare Euskal Institute works with these centres both through the Euskara Munduan programme and by sending teaching materials. The university network partnered with Etxepare – centres the Basque and culture are promoted – has organised another twelve activities.
As in previous editions, this year the Etxepare Basque Institute has joined Korrika to shine a spotlight on the Basque language around the world. Etxepare has also organised a video competition among students from the Euskal Etxeas and the university network and will sponsor the ´Korrika Munduan´ in San Sebastian’s Zuloaga Square on 10 April, the last day of the fun run.
