The 39th edition of the International Film Festival of Uruguay, organised by Cinemateca Uruguaya with support from the Etxepare Basque Institute together with other organisations and institutions, will take place from the 4th to the 12th of December 2021. Thanks to this collaboration, ´Zumiriki´ directed by Oskar Alegria and ´Zerua Blu´ by Lur Olaizola will be shown at the festival in Montevideo. In addition, programmer Maren Zubeldia will be on the jury of the section dedicated to new filmmakers and will participate in the round table on new international cinema.

This edition, much like the year before, is being held under restrictive conditions and in extraordinary circumstances due to the pandemic, resulting in a smaller festival.

The programme is made up of 107 films (66 feature films and 41 short films) representing more than 50 countries and is divided into five competitive sections, an international overview section, a thematic section reflecting on the phenomenon of film (‘Ojo con el cine’), a showcase of Human Rights films and another one of short films from the Basque Country, as well as some special screenings.

The New Directors Competition is the section par excellence for moviegoers keen to discover new voices and creative new worlds. The jury will be made up of Maren Zubeldia, programmer at Zinegoak, the Bilbao International Film and Performing Arts Festival and the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Bilbao; Uruguayan director Gabriela Guillermo, and Uruguayan director and scriptwriter Javier Palleiro.
