Call for grant applications for foreign language translation samples now open (2024)
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
One of the aims of the Etxepare Basque Institute is to promote literature originally written in Basque among global audiences. To achieve this goal, it is essential to have samples translated into foreign languages. This call for proposals aims to provide literature samples suitable for international promotion, with the intention of translating these samples into foreign languages. The submission of proposals is open from 1 February 2024 and will close when all funds allocated for this call have been awarded.
This call invites publishers or translators to apply for funding to translate chapters or excerpts of a book. This benefits the author directly, providing them with samples of their work in English and/or French to help them achieve their goals. This call operates on an automatic basis, meaning all applications meeting the specified criteria receive support for translation and will be included in the list of samples available on the Basque Literature Samples portal.
Consistent with the primary objective of international promotion, these samples must be translated into English or French and should not exceed 15% of the book. Submissions may be made by writers, publishers or literary agents.
Etxepare will allocate 8,000 euros for the translation of submitted samples, with a maximum of 400 euros allocated to each.
Desde 2021 the Etxepare Basque Institute has initiated an annual call for grants targeting the translation of literary samples. This year, the Institute launched the Basque Literature Samples portal at the www.basquebooks.eus website to facilitate the sale of publishing rights in Euskara and therefore increase global readership. The portal includes samples translated through this call for entries since 2021 and samples of translations of books that have been awarded the Euskadi Prize since 2021.
If you wish to apply for the call, you will find all the here.
