Two Basque short films will be screened at Filmfest Dresden, the International Short Film Festival held in Dresden, Germany: ‘Cuerdas’ by Esti Urresola and ‘Errotatiba’ by Iratxe Fresneda.
The festival, sponsored in part by the Etxepare Basque Institute, is holding its 37th edition. This year’s focus is ‘Let´s stick together’. Since 1989, the festival has showcased distinguished short films from around the globe in the city´s cinemas over its six-day run.
Esti Urresola’s short film ‘Cuerdas’ (2022) will be shown on 8, 9 and 11 April as part of the ‘We act’ programme.
‘Cuerdas’ addresses the issue of pollution and its impact on workers´ health. The protagonist of the short film is a member of a women´s choir that is on the brink of dissolving and must choose whether to accept assistance from one of the valley´s most polluting companies.
As part of the ‘Open air’ section, Iratxe Fresneda’s short film ‘Errotatiba’ (2024) is slated for 8 and 10 April.
‘Errotatiba’ explores the fragility of memory and the spaces that humans create to preserve it. The short film prompts viewers to reflect on the loss of people, emphasising that nothing lasts forever.
Also of note is the fact that Basque creator, artist, director and animation producer, Isabel Herguera, will be curating the festival´s animation programme.
